Assam Launches Free Transport Scheme for Tea Garden Students

The Assam government has launched a free transport and escort facility for students from Classes I to X in tea garden areas to improve school attendance and reduce dropout rates.

Announced by Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, the scheme under Samagra Shiksha Assam will benefit 9,714 students across 198 schools in 11 districts. It will run from June 10, 2026, to March 31, 2027.

Each student will receive transport support worth ₹5,400 for the academic year, with arrangements managed by School Management Committees. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the initiative will help ensure that children in tea garden communities can continue their education without transportation barriers.
