Assam Hikes Liquor Prices, Introduces Revenue Guarantee System

Guwahati: The Assam government has amended excise laws and introduced a Minimum Guaranteed Revenue (MGR) system for wholesale and retail liquor license holders. The move is expected to increase liquor prices by 7-12 per cent from July 1.
Under the new rules, licensees must deposit the prescribed MGR each quarter or face a 10 per cent penalty on any shortfall. The government has also allowed ‘On’ licensees to sell only sealed bottles of 750 ml or more. However, premium, classic category liquor brands and wine will remain unaffected by the price hike.
