Fresh Floods Hit Assam as Rising River Waters Inundate Lakhimpur and Other Districts

Guwahati: Fresh flooding affected several parts of Assam on Monday, with Lakhimpur worst hit after increased water discharge from the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project inundated downstream villages, forcing hundreds of residents to move to safer places. Nearly 20 revenue villages were affected, with reports of livestock losses and erosion.
Heavy rainfall also caused flooding in Jorhat following a breach in the Puthi River embankment, while flash floods from Bhutan inundated parts of Bijni in western Assam. Residents have urged the government to provide immediate relief and implement permanent flood-control measures.
