Two Killed in Elephant Attacks in Dhekiajuli, Assam

Dhekiajuli: Two people were killed in separate wild elephant attacks in Dhekiajuli on Tuesday morning, with the victims identified as Rahmat Ali of No. 2 Pirakata and Ganesh Toppo of Ratunjuli. Local residents said the incidents occurred around 6 am, with Toppo reportedly attacked while trying to protect his two children, who also sustained injuries.

The latest fatalities have taken the number of people killed in human-elephant conflict in Assam to five in the past 16 days. The deaths follow earlier fatal incidents in Goalpara and Digboi. The Assam government has reported 1,147 human deaths linked to elephant conflict over the past decade and has announced Rs 6 lakh ex-gratia compensation for families of victims, to be disbursed within 72 hours.
