Gauhati High Court Seeks Report on Whereabouts of Two Women Reportedly Sent to Bangladesh

Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court has directed the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Assam government to submit a status report by October 14 on the whereabouts of Jahanara Begum and Mumtaz Begum, who were reportedly pushed into Bangladesh in June despite the court setting aside the Foreigners’ Tribunal verdict against them in April 2026.

The court had ordered a fresh hearing in their cases, observing that the tribunal had not properly examined the evidence. While the Assam government has claimed that contact was established with Mumtaz Begum, her son has disputed the claim, saying the family has received no confirmation of her whereabouts.
