Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Jolts Southern Panama

A preliminary magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck southern Panama on Monday at 6:20 p.m. local time, according to the USGS. The shallow tremor, centred about 18 kilometres west of Río Grande, caused very strong shaking. Authorities reported no immediate casualties or additional infrastructure damage.
The quake followed a devastating magnitude 7.7 earthquake on October 9 that injured at least 27 people and damaged nearly 900 homes. More than 300 aftershocks have since rattled the region, while emergency teams continue assessing affected communities and monitoring structural safety.
