AASU Calls for Greater Recognition of Garia Maria Community
AASU president Utpal Sarma emphasized that the Garia Maria community is vital to Assamese identity. Speaking at the 19th foundation day of Sadou Asom Garia Maria Deshi Jatiya Parishad in Bhella, he reiterated AASU’s support for their indigenous status and called for better protection measures. Sarma criticized the delimitation process for depriving the community of fair representation and demanded an Upper House for indigenous voices. He assured continued AASU support and stressed Assam’s history of communal harmony. The event also honored Dr. Babul Chandra Das with the Sankar Ajan Samanway Asam Hitoishi Award.
