AASU protests govt move to teach science & maths in English

Members of the All Assam Students Union (Aasu) in Dibrugarh staged a 10-hour hunger strike from 6am to 4pm in protest against the government’s decision to teach science and maths in English in state-run schools.

The Assam cabinet had on last July 28 approved the introduction of English as the medium of instruction for the two subjects from Classes VI to XII from this academic year. So from April 1, textbooks of science and maths in English were distributed by the education department to students of vernacular-medium government schools. The move has, however, been met with strong protests by Aasu.
