AASU Raises Bogus Voting Concerns Over Influx of People Ahead of Assam Polls

The All Assam Students Union has raised alarm over the arrival of hundreds of people in Assam by train and bus on the eve of polling, suspecting possible bogus voting.

AASU president Utpal Sarma termed the influx “suspicious,” noting that many individuals claimed to be local voters but could neither speak nor understand Assamese. The organisation urged the Election Commission of India to clarify voting eligibility rules.

Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad president Palash Changmai also expressed concern, calling it a serious issue for Assam’s future.

Media verification showed mixed findings—some individuals lacked basic knowledge of their constituencies, while others claimed to be migrant workers returning home to vote.

In a separate incident, a youth from Uttar Pradesh approached Congress candidate Mira Borthakur seeking help to vote despite holding voter IDs from another state. She refused and alerted the media; the youth is now in police custody, with Hatigaon Police investigating.

Authorities reiterated that only those listed on Assam’s voter rolls are eligible to vote, as civil society groups called for strict vigilance to prevent any electoral malpractice.
