African Swine Fever Outbreak in Karbi Anglong Prompts Strict Containment Measures

An African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak has been confirmed in Karbi Anglong, originating in Bura Teron Gaon, Longnit. District Commissioner Nirola Phangchopi has enforced strict containment measures. A 10-kilometre “Infected Zone” has been established, with surrounding areas designated as “Surveillance Zones.”

Under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, the movement of pigs and related products is prohibited. Public gatherings involving pigs have been banned, and culling of infected animals is underway. Affected farmers will receive compensation from the government. Non-compliance may lead to legal action under the Disaster Management Act, 2005. Local authorities are ensuring adherence to protocols and raising public awareness.
