AJP Chief Challenges CM Sarma Over ST Status Issue

AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi has challenged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to resolve the long-pending demand for ST status for six communities before the 2026 Assembly elections.
Speaking in Dibrugarh, Gogoi accused the BJP of delaying the issue for political gain despite the Bill already being in Parliament. He termed the new ministerial committee a “gimmick” ahead of elections.
Responding, CM Sarma dismissed the remarks, saying Gogoi labels every government initiative a “lollipop” despite public benefit. Sarma reiterated that discussions will be held with protesting tribal groups and assured that the proposal will not affect existing ST reservations.
