AJP Opposes Land Law Amendments, Cites Threat to Indigenous Rights
The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has opposed proposed amendments to Assam’s 139-year-old land laws, warning of threats to indigenous land rights. At a press meet, AJP leader Chandra Kanta Das criticized the government for lack of public consultation and alleged secretive processes. The party fears the changes may ease land sales in protected tribal areas, risking ancestral lands. AJP demanded clarity on proposed changes and a longer consultation period. It also opposed the Jagiroad semiconductor project, urging focus on agriculture over land-intensive industries.
