Akhil Gogoi Emerges as Key Player in Assam Poll Battle

Akhil Gogoi has strengthened his position in Assam politics, with his party securing 13 seats in alliance with Congress ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, up from just one seat in 2021.

Once a grassroots activist, Gogoi rose to prominence through anti-corruption movements and anti-CAA protests, later winning from Sivasagar while in jail, marking his shift into electoral politics. He now plays a key role in the Opposition’s strategy against the BJP.

In Sivasagar, the contest has become triangular with BJP candidate Kushal Dowari and AGP’s Prodip Hazarika also in the race. Despite BJP’s organisational strength, Gogoi remains a strong contender due to his grassroots support.

The result in Sivasagar is being seen as a test of whether his movement-based politics can turn into a stable electoral force.
