Akhil Gogoi Slams Assam Govt Over “Loan-Driven” Growth Claims

Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi on Friday criticised the BJP-led Assam government, alleging that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has projected a misleading picture of the state’s economic growth.

Addressing the media in Guwahati, Gogoi claimed that the government’s cited 45 percent growth is based on selective and outdated data, and driven largely by borrowing rather than real expansion. He alleged that Assam’s debt has risen sharply during Sarma’s tenure, even as gains in per capita income remain modest compared to other states.

Gogoi also flagged poor social indicators, high inflation, rising power tariffs, and dependence on welfare schemes like Orunodoi, arguing these reflect economic weakness rather than strength. He accused the government of “economic showmanship” and said welfare announcements are politically motivated ahead of elections.
