AKRSU Announces Padyatra Over Delay in ST Status Demand

Ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the All Koch-Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) announced a padyatra on February 9 in Bongaigaon and Chirang, protesting the delay in granting Scheduled Tribe status. The group accused the BJP government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of failing to keep promises and called for hoisting black flags on February 14 during the Prime Minister’s Assam visit. AKRSU urged the community not to vote for the BJP and warned of intensified protests. Meanwhile, the Centre said it has received Assam’s proposal for ST status for six communities and the process is under examination.
