Assam achieves first IVF calf birth, boosting prospects for dairy farming

Assam has recorded a major breakthrough in animal husbandry, with researchers from the College of Veterinary Science under Assam Veterinary and Fishery University successfully producing the state’s first calf through IVF and advanced embryo transfer technology.

The female calf, named Lakhimi, was born on March 26 at Sonapur in Kamrup district. Belonging to the Gir breed, the calf weighed 23 kg and was reported healthy.

The achievement was led by Dr Manjyoti Bhuyan along with Dr Manna Baruti and Dr Raju Deka, demonstrating that advanced reproductive technologies can work effectively in field conditions.

Scientists said the development could help improve cattle genetics, increase milk production, and boost farmers’ incomes, with more IVF-based breeding expected in the coming months.
