Assam Adopts Unified Pension Scheme for Govt Employees

The Assam Cabinet approved the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), merging OPS and NPS for better management. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said UPS guarantees pensions like OPS, with employees eligible after 10–25 years of service. New recruits can choose NPS if preferred. Employees have one year to opt between systems. The scheme, effective April 1, 2025, ensures 50% of last year’s average basic pay as pension or a minimum ₹10,000 monthly, with family pension benefits included.
