Assam Assembly Backs 33% Reservation for Women in State Legislatures

The Assam government on Monday tabled a resolution in the Assembly supporting the early implementation of 33% reservation for women in state legislatures after delimitation.

Introducing the resolution, Assam minister Ajanta Neog said the move aims to strengthen women’s participation in politics and governance.

She stated that women make up nearly half of the population but remain underrepresented in politics due to social and educational barriers. The resolution also backed the Centre’s efforts to implement the women’s quota law introduced under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Neog appealed to all parties in the Assembly to support the “historic resolution” for women’s empowerment.
