Assam Assembly Flags Teacher Shortage and Infrastructure Gaps in Schools

The Assam Assembly was informed that 2,670 primary schools are running with a single teacher and over 13,000 schools lack permanent headmasters. Thousands of subject teacher posts remain vacant across upper primary, high and higher secondary levels. Data also showed major classroom shortages and a decline in government schools due to mergers, dropping from 52,228 in 2016–17 to 44,300 in 2024–25. The figures highlight ongoing challenges in staffing, leadership and infrastructure despite claims that no school is without teachers.
