Assam cities like Guwahati fall short of national standards for air quality.

According to the Pollution Control Board Assam, the ambient air quality standards in five Assam cities and towns – Nalbari, Guwahati, Nagaon, Shivasagar, and Silchar – have not been met. This alarming discovery is a part of a bigger issue; similar problems have been detected in 131 Indian cities. The seriousness of this urban areas’ air quality crisis has been brought to light by senior environment journalist Manoj Saikia.
