Assam CM Defends Renaming Karimganj as Sribhumi

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma defended renaming Karimganj district as Sribhumi, referencing Rabindranath Tagore’s century-old term for the area. He criticized Congress for opposing the move, stating the name “Karimganj” lacks historical significance.

The state cabinet approved the renaming along with initiatives like publishing the Panchayat voters’ list before December 30 and organizing the Assam Investment and Infrastructure Summit on February 24. Sarma reaffirmed plans to rename places reflecting Assam’s history and culture.
