Assam CM Inaugurates Solar Project at Secretariat

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Janata Bhawan solar project at the Assam Secretariat complex. The 2.5-MW solar PV system, costing Rs. 12.56 crore, will generate 3 lakh units of electricity monthly, with a projected recovery of investment within four years and monthly savings of Rs. 30 lakh.

The project makes the Assam Secretariat the first civil secretariat in India to fully rely on solar power, reducing annual carbon emissions by 3,060 metric tonnes. Sarma emphasized the importance of transitioning to green energy, urging all government offices, starting with medical colleges and universities, to adopt solar power.

He also highlighted other solar initiatives in the state, aimed at reducing dependency on external energy sources. Sarma encouraged public participation in the “PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Scheme” to reduce household electricity expenses and announced the end of free electricity for government officials’ residences from July 1.
