Assam Engineering College Struggles with Infrastructure and Staffing Challenges

Assam Engineering College, established in 1955, faces teacher shortages, inadequate staff quarters, and limited student accommodation. The college, with eight technical departments and 2,000 students, can house only 1,200 in hostels. A new 200-seat hostel is under construction.

The absence of a boundary wall has led to encroachments, though campus demarcation was completed last year. The Public Works Department prepared a project report, but construction is pending.

Most teachers avoid campus due to dilapidated quarters. Proposals for new apartment-style quarters await government approval. Teacher shortages persist, worsened by recent transfers and unresolved legal issues over appointments.
