Assam Govt to Revise High School History Textbooks

The Assam government has directed the Education Department to revise high school history textbooks, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. He questioned textbook references claiming that Ahom warrior Bagh Hazarika fought alongside Lachit Borphukan in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat, asserting that Mising leader Miri Handique led the fight against the Mughals in Kamrup. Sarma said the decision to rewrite portions of history has been conveyed to the Education Minister. The move comes amid wider debate, with historian Romila Thapar cautioning against selective alteration of historical narratives in school curricula.
