Assam Issues New Guidelines for Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019
The Special Director General of Police (Border) in Assam has received new guidelines for implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. As per a directive from Partha Pratim Majumdar, Secretary to the Government of Assam, Home and Political Department, the border police are instructed not to forward cases of eligible individuals from Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, or Christian communities who entered India from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, or Pakistan on or before December 31, 2014, directly to the Foreigners Tribunals. Instead, these individuals should apply for citizenship through the portal https://indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in.
Their applications will be reviewed by the Government of India. A separate register will be maintained for these cases. However, individuals who entered after December 31, 2014, will still be forwarded to the Foreigners Tribunals for further action. These instructions were issued on July 5, 2024, as part of efforts to effectively implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.
