Assam Launches Drive to Bring 5.5 Lakh Out-of-School Students Back

Around 5.5 lakh students enrolled in schools across Assam are currently not attending classes, prompting the state government to launch a mission to identify and bring them back into the education system. Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu said the issue was identified through analysis of school and Anganwadi records, with the government now tracking attendance and dropouts on a monthly basis.

Speaking at the state-level Teachers’ Day programme in Guwahati, Pegu said the government has also partnered with an NGO to identify, enrol and retain out-of-school adolescents aged 15–18, particularly girls. The event also honoured meritorious teachers and recognised colleges and educators for achievements in higher education, patents and other fields.
