Assam Makes Assamese Language Mandatory in Schools

The Assam government has decided to make Assamese a compulsory subject in all English-medium schools affiliated with the state board and CBSE. This move follows the recommendations of the Justice Biplab Sarma Committee and aligns with Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, which emphasizes the promotion of the Assamese language.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the policy aims to preserve linguistic heritage and strengthen students’ cultural identity. In the Bodoland Territorial Region, students will be required to learn either Assamese or Bodo, ensuring linguistic inclusivity. Additionally, from April 14, all government notices and documents will be published in Assamese and English, while in BTR, they will also be available in Bodo.
