Assam police arrested betel nut smugglers and seized nuts worth Rs 50 lakh

The Assam police seized an oil tanker that was used to smuggle Burmese betel nuts in the Cachar district on Wednesday. According to reports, the twelve-wheeled oil tanker with a Bharat Petroleum label was confiscated following a search at the police patrol post at Lailapur. The tanker was reportedly used to carry the nuts to Assam from Mizoram via NH-306.

The driver and cleaner of the tanker, identified as Babul Hossain and Badrul Hossain, were arrested on charges of smuggling, the report said. They both hail from Lanka in Assam’s Hojai district. The duo were taken to the Dholai police station for interrogation, the news report said.
