Assam Prepares Flood Defence Measures Ahead of Monsoon

Around 40 per cent of Assam’s geographical area remains vulnerable to annual floods caused by the Brahmaputra, Barak and their tributaries. The State Water Resources Department has identified 347 vulnerable locations across Assam ahead of the monsoon season.

Officials said flood-fighting materials, including geo mega tubes, sandbags and geo fabric, have already been deployed in sensitive areas. The department has also formed embankment monitoring committees involving local authorities and youths for better flood management.

According to officials, modern technologies helped close several embankment breaches in 2024 and 2025, significantly reducing flood and erosion damage in the state.
