Assam Proposes Jagiroad for New Cities Scheme under Smart City Mission Extension

Assam has proposed Jagiroad for inclusion in the New Cities Scheme, an extension of the Smart Cities Mission launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The scheme earmarks ₹8,000 crore as a performance-based challenge fund to incubate eight new cities, with each state allowed one city under this initiative.

Minister Manohar Lal stated that 28 proposals from 23 states, including Arunachal Pradesh’s Gumin Nagar and Manipur’s Gateway City, have been submitted. Revised proposals were sought from northeastern states due to initial quality concerns.

The 100 existing Smart Cities are implementing 8,000 projects worth ₹1.65 lakh crore, with 91% completed. The Centre has allocated ₹46,419 crore, of which ₹44,545 crore has been utilized.

Additionally, under the PM-eBus Sewa initiative, ₹437.50 crore was allocated to eight states for deploying 10,000 electric buses to improve urban mobility.
