Assam Reclaims 495 Acres of Wetland in Goalpara, Faces Backlash Over Eviction Drive

The Assam government has reclaimed 495 acres of government-notified wetland from alleged encroachers at Hasila Beel in Goalpara. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated the eviction was lawful and aimed at protecting natural ecosystems. A second phase is planned at Rakhyasini Pahar. However, the Congress has condemned the move, calling it inhumane and claiming over 700 families were rendered homeless. Displaced residents are seeking urgent rehabilitation.
