Assam Sees 97% Drop in Child Marriages, Conviction Rate Rises

Assam recorded a 97% drop in child marriages—from 5,410 cases in 2023 to 122 till June 2025. The state’s conviction rate also rose from 5.51% in 2021 to 26.22% in 2025. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma credited government efforts and Assam Police’s action. The state aims for a 60% conviction rate and complete eradication of child marriage by 2026. PM Modi praised Assam’s model and urged other states to learn from it. Assam also repealed the 1935 Moslem Marriage Act to curb child marriages and ensure uniform marriage registration.
