Assam Spends ₹19 Crore Daily to Meet Power Shortfall

Assam is facing a major power deficit, forcing the State to spend around ₹19 crore per day on electricity purchases, Power Minister Prashanta Phukan informed the Assembly.

The State’s peak demand is 2,842 MW, while Assam’s own generation is only 289–315 MW, plus 179 MW from solar sources. Even with long-term purchase agreements, the State still falls short and relies on costly market purchases.

To reduce dependency, new projects—including the 120 MW Lower Kopili and 24 MW Karbi Langpi Middle-II hydro plants—are under development. The Assam Electricity Grid Corporation has also submitted a long-term resource plan and is seeking Central assistance.
