Assam to Become Power-Surplus by 2031: CM Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that the state, once power-deficit, will become power-surplus by 2031 and supply electricity to Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tripura. He said Assam is expected to generate nearly 3,200 MW of thermal power within the state.

Sarma also stated that construction of the elevated corridor in Kaziranga will begin next month and said the newly upgraded Guwahati airport will match national standards. He highlighted progress in medical education, noting that Assam now has 2,000 medical seats, with a target of nearly 5,000 by 2030.

The remarks were made during a scooter distribution event under the Dr Banikanta Kakati Merit Award Scheme. This year, 11,250 students will receive scooters, a reduction from previous years due to the introduction of the Nijut Moina Scheme. Sarma added that a new support scheme for male students will begin on January 1, 2026. The chief minister urged students to wear helmets and hold driving licences before riding.
