Assam to Make Smart Meters Mandatory for All by 2025

The Assam government has amended the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020, making smart meters mandatory for all consumers from April 1, 2025, to implement the Time of Day (ToD) tariff system. Under ToD, electricity rates will vary based on the time of consumption—cheaper during solar hours and higher during peak hours. This system, already in effect for large commercial consumers, aims to reduce bills and promote better load management. It will also support renewable energy integration and efficient power usage.
