Assam to Open Northeast India’s First Prison-Run Fuel Depot
The Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOC) and the Assam prisons department are launching Northeast India’s first fuel depot operated by convicted prisoners at Barpeta district jail. This initiative aims to provide inmates with work experience and skills for reintegration into society.
The project, progressing swiftly, includes plans for another depot in Golaghat. Initially, 25 inmates will be trained in fuel depot operations. This collaboration is part of a broader prison reform effort to instill responsibility and self-worth among inmates while generating revenue for rehabilitation programs. Both IOC and prison officials are optimistic about the project’s positive impact on inmates and the community.
