Assam to Submit Memorandum on Tribal Status for Six Communities

The Assam government will soon submit a memorandum to the Centre on the long-pending demand for tribal status for six communities, Cabinet Minister Ranoj Pegu said on Friday. He stated that the focus is on granting tribal status without affecting existing communities or disturbing the current reservation framework.
Pegu said the state examined key aspects, including reservation quantum, removal of the six groups from the OBC category, and revised reservation for remaining OBC communities. He clarified that the report contains no new recommendations, only corrections of factual or numerical errors.
Calling it a legacy issue, the minister urged that it should not be politicised and said the memorandum will be submitted to the Union Home Ministry through a proper and balanced process aimed at ensuring social justice.
