Assam Tribune Editor Prafulla Govinda Baruah Passes Away

Prafulla Govinda Baruah, Chairman Emeritus and Editor of The Assam Tribune, passed away on Sunday night at a private hospital due to age-related ailments. He was 92. A Padma Shri awardee, Baruah was regarded as a towering figure in Assam’s newspaper industry.
Born in 1932, Baruah took over the Assam Tribune group in 1966 and later became Editor of the region’s leading English daily. Under his leadership, the newspaper played a strong role in highlighting issues of the Northeast. He also contributed significantly to literature, education, and socio-cultural initiatives in Assam.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and several organisations have expressed deep condolences over his demise.
