Assam Vehicles Reportedly Turned Back from Meghalaya Despite Suspension of Blockade

GUWAHATI: Fresh reports emerged on Sunday of Assam-registered vehicles being stopped and turned back from Meghalaya, despite Assam-based drivers’ unions suspending their three-day blockade and agitation. Drivers alleged that restrictions continued at Byrnihat and Umiam, disrupting passenger movement along the Guwahati–Shillong route.

The Assam-side blockade was suspended on Saturday after Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora assured protesting drivers that their concerns over security and compensation would be addressed. However, Meghalaya taxi unions reportedly continued their protest against the entry of Assam-registered tourist vehicles, affecting travel between Guwahati and Shillong.
