Assam’s Power Demand to Exceed 7,000 MW by 2041, Major Challenges Ahead

Assam’s peak power demand is projected to rise from 2,800 MW to 7,006 MW by 2041-42, posing challenges for APDCL. Current supply arrangements total 2,496 MW, with additional short-term procurement of 471 MW. Long-term plans include agreements with NUPPL, NTPC, and others, development of thermal and renewable energy projects, and tie-ups with Bhutan and NHPC for hydroelectric power. Notable projects include a 1,000 MW solar power plant in Karbi Anglong, expected by 2025. Renewable energy and battery storage initiatives are also underway to address the demand-supply gap.
