The All Tai Ahom Students Union (ATASU) reacted strongly to Goalpara West MLA Abdur Rashid Mandal’s statement that no Bangladeshi Miya could be driven out of Upper Assam. ATASU burned the MLA’s effigy in Tinsukia and announced protests across Sibsagar, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Charaideu, and Golaghat. They also barred the MLA from entering Upper Assam. ATASU leaders called on indigenous Muslims to support their efforts to expel illegal Bangladeshi settlers and demanded that the MLA apologize in the Assembly and support their cause.
