Bar Association Referendum Opposes Shifting of Gauhati High Court

The Gauhati High Court Bar Association on Friday held a referendum on shifting the High Court to Rangmahal in North Guwahati, with an overwhelming majority voting against the proposal. Of the 1,358 votes cast, 1,164 opposed the move, while only 154 supported it.

The referendum reflects growing opposition within the legal fraternity to the state government’s plan, despite the acquisition of 100 bighas of land in North Guwahati for a new court complex. Dissent has intensified following the government’s announcement of a proposed foundation stone laying in January 2026.
