CBI Arrests GST Commissioner and Middleman in Bribery Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Commissioner (Appeals), Central GST & CE, Guwahati, and a middleman in connection with an alleged bribery case amounting to Rs. 3.83 lakh.

The case stemmed from a complaint regarding construction work for N.F. Railway, where a Service Tax demand of Rs. 48,43,034 was contested in appeal. During hearings, the Commissioner allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs. 3.83 lakh through middlemen to settle the matter.

The CBI conducted a successful trap operation, arresting both the Commissioner and the middleman while recovering incriminating materials from their premises. They will be presented before the Competent Court as part of ongoing proceedings.
