Coal Fire Crisis Deepens in Karbi Anglong After Mining Tragedy

The January 6 rat-hole mining tragedy in Umrangso, which killed eight workers, continues to haunt Karbi Anglong. Protests against illegal mining persist amid allegations of political and police involvement. Though mining is currently suspended, massive stockpiles of low-grade coal in Langmili and Disobai are burning uncontrollably, endangering health and agriculture. Locals suffer respiratory issues, polluted water, and crop damage. MP Amarsing Tisso has promised to visit the affected areas, but villagers remain doubtful of swift action.
