Congress Accuses Assam Government of Financial Crisis, Calls for White Paper

The Congress party has accused the Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, of plunging the state into a severe financial crisis. Former APCC president Ripun Bora claimed that Assam’s revenue deficit surged by 341.76% between 2021 and 2023, while the fiscal deficit grew by 52.06%. He alleged that the state is relying heavily on loans, raising its debt to Rs 1.52 lakh crore. Bora further pointed out delayed salary payments and a decline in capital expenditure. The Congress has demanded a white paper detailing Assam’s financial position from 2021 to 2024.
