Congress Accuses Assam Govt of Major Financial Irregularities Citing CAG Report

The Assam Congress on Tuesday accused the Himanta Biswa Sarma–led government of serious financial irregularities after the CAG report for 2023–24 highlighted major gaps in spending, revenue, and accountability. Senior Congress leader Ripun Bora said the report exposed discrepancies across departments and alleged mismanagement of public funds.

Congress cited unsubmitted utilisation certificates for over Rs 18,669 crore and flagged large unaccounted expenditures in key departments. The CAG also warned of Assam’s rising debt, projected to reach Rs 1.74 lakh crore by 2026. Bora claimed the government was borrowing excessively for political gains rather than development.
