Cyclone Remal Weakens, Triggers Alerts and Heavy Rainfall Warnings in Assam
The Severe Cyclonic Storm “Remal” has weakened into a Cyclonic Storm over Coastal Bangladesh and adjoining Coastal West Bengal, as reported by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on May 27. IMD has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in Assam and northeastern states on May 27 and 28, issuing a ‘red alert’ for several districts, including Chirang, Goalpara, and Dima Hasao, and an ‘orange alert’ for others.
Squally winds up to 60 kmph are expected in South Assam and Meghalaya on May 27. Preparedness efforts are in place, with NDRF teams deployed and Fire and Emergency Services on high alert. The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has completed desilting major river channels and mobilized resources to prevent waterlogging. Anticipatory evacuations from landslide-prone areas may also be considered to ensure safety.
