Delhi High Court Halts Transfer of Assam Elephant to Sainik Farms
The Delhi High Court has stayed the proposed transfer of Ranjita, a 40-year-old elephant from Assam, to Sainik Farms in South Delhi. The court, noting a lack of clarity on the transfer’s purpose, directed that Ranjita should not be moved from her current location.
The stay was issued in response to a petition filed by the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO), challenging provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, that allow captive elephant transfers for religious or other purposes. The matter is set for hearing on November 28.
