Following CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s eviction call, suspected encroachers have begun leaving Assam’s Uriamghat area near the Assam-Nagaland border. In places like Kherbari, families are voluntarily dismantling homes. Areas under Sorupathar subdivision — including Chilanijan and Dayalpur — have seen large-scale encroachment. Activists claim many settlers have voter IDs from other districts. Sarma earlier warned of demographic shifts and legal challenges due to settlers possessing documents valid under the 1971 Assam Accord.
