First Citizenship Under CAA Granted to Bangladeshi National in Assam

The Union Home Ministry granted Indian citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) to Dulan Kumar Das, a Bangladesh national living in Assam’s Silchar for 36 years. Das, who entered India illegally in 1988 due to alleged religious persecution, is the first in Assam to receive citizenship through CAA. The decision has sparked backlash, especially from the All Assam Students Union (AASU), which views it as a betrayal of the Assam Accord. Das must now obtain a citizenship certificate from Guwahati to finalize the process.
